USSEC Highlights Food Safety Awareness to Korean Aquaculture Industry

One of USSEC’s roles in Korea is educating the local aquaculture industry about food safety awareness.  USSEC worked with local aqua feed mills over concerns regarding the potential risks of dioxin, salmonella and heavy metal contamination in fishes of Korean target flounder growers.  USSEC recommended that the target flounder growers, with whom USSEC Korea’s Aquaculture Utilization contractor met just last month, pay more attention to monitoring the fish through the quality control system.  The results of trials and case studies were highlighted; these studies demonstrate that:  animal-derived feed ingredients tend to test positive for salmonella more often than plant-derived feed ingredients; and fish fed diets high in vegetable oils had a dioxin concentration of only 25% of dioxin compared to fish fed the high fish oil diet.  Two case studies of salmonella contamination in fish meal shipments were also discussed.  The shipments were destroyed, heat-treated or returned to origin.

USSEC’s work regarding food safety awareness in Korea is timely because it also highlights the benefits of soy in expectation of the increasing percentage of protein meal-based extruded pellet feed in the Korean fish feed market.
